Poul Hundevad

Denmark 1917-2011

Poul Hundevad (1917–2011) was a Danish furniture designer and cabinetmaker known for his functional and elegantly crafted designs. Born in Vamdrup, Denmark, he trained as a carpenter and later established his own cabinetmaking workshop and furniture factory. In the early 1950s, he founded Hundevad & Co. in Vamdrup, producing furniture both of his own design and in collaboration with Danish designers such as Carlo Jensen, Kaj Winding, Harald Plum, and Mogens Plum.

Hundevad’s work was deeply rooted in Danish modernism, characterized by clean lines, high-quality craftsmanship, and the use of natural materials, particularly teak. His most well-known piece, the Guldhøj chair, was introduced in 1960 and was a direct reproduction of a folding chair from the Scandinavian Bronze Age, discovered in a burial mound near Vamdrup.

Throughout his career, Hundevad designed a wide range of furniture, including dining chairs, sideboards, cabinets, bookcases, and trolley carts. His designs balanced traditional craftsmanship with modern aesthetics, reinforcing Denmark’s reputation as a leader in furniture design. Today, Hundevad’s work remains highly regarded, and Hundevad & Co. continues production.
