Marlene De Beer

South Africa 1957- 

Marlene de Beer is a contemporary jeweller and former senior lecturer at Durban University of Technology. She earned a PhD in Visual Arts from Stellenbosch University in 2017 and won the Premier Award at the South African Jewellery Awards in 2019. De Beer has participated in numerous national and international exhibitions. Her work harnesses the expressive potential of non-precious materials such as porcelain, glass, vitreous enamel and sisal, creating a phenomenological response to her lived experiences. Her porcelain neckpieces, incorporating indigenous thorns collected from local trails, embody contrasts of fragility and strength, and evoke themes of protection, suffering, and belonging.
