Daniel Hockly

Cape Colony

Active c.1787-1835

Born in London. He sailed for the Cape on board the Chapman in December 1819, accompanied by his wife and children. During this journey, his wife Elizabeth gave birth to a daughter at sea and his five-year-old son Daniel died before they reached their destination. They landed at Algoa Bay in April 1820 and Hockly, along with John Rose were of the first English silversmiths to go ashore. Hockley and family at first settled at the mouth of the Fish River, later moving to Uitenhage, Grahamstown, Cradock and Graaff-Reinet, where he died in 1835.
