Carine Terreblanche completed her BA (FA), BA (Hons), and MA (FA) at Stellenbosch University and was an exchange student at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam in 1994. She worked as a freelance goldsmith in Cape Town for six years and has lectured at Stellenbosch University for over two decades. Since 2007, she has served as Coordinator and Head of the Creative Jewellery and Metal Design Division in the Visual Arts Department. Carine’s practice combines jewellery and sculptural techniques, fusing handcraft skills, materials, and conceptual ideas into three-dimensional wearable objects and sculptures that provoke reflection and critical thought. Her research interrogates the boundaries between jewellery and sculpture, exploring the body-object relationship and the socio-economic forces that shape notions of beauty and desirability. Using accessible materials such as wood, plastic, ceramics, and found objects, her work emphasizes design and aesthetic ideas independent of wealth, creating pieces that challenge conventional hierarchies in contemporary jewellery and art.
