Carine Terreblanche completed her BA (FA), BA (Hons), and MA (FA) at Stellenbosch University and was an exchange student at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam in 1994. She worked as a freelance goldsmith in Cape Town for six years and has lectured at Stellenbosch University for over two decades. Since 2007, she has served as Coordinator and Head of the Creative Jewellery and Metal Design Division in the Visual Arts Department. Terreblanche’s practice uses the medium of jewellery design and sculptural techniques to create a fusion or amalgamation between knowledge, handcraft skills, techniques and chosen materials, as a critical discipline that allows her to reflect on her surroundings and translate her ideas into three-dimensional wearable objects and sculptures that stimulate critical thought. She explores the dialogue between more abstract forms and figurative interpretations, reflecting on and critically engaging with the socio-economic forces that largely determine what we consider beautiful and desirable in the context of wearing, buying, or creating and displaying wearable objects, jewellery, and sculptural artworks. She uses more affordable materials to communicate ideas of beauty and design stripped of bling and economic status.
