Karien van Langelaar

Stellenbosch, South-Africa 

Karien van Langelaar is a Stellenbosch-based jewellery artist and designer whose work is characterised by organic forms, sculptural volume and a minimalist aesthetic. Inspired by the shapes, textures and intricate structures found in nature, her jewellery explores ideas of connection and wholeness, with circles and solid forms recurring throughout her work. Working primarily in sterling silver, van Langelaar combines traditional and contemporary techniques, including fly pressing, smithing and wax carving, while also incorporating gold selectively. She holds a BA Fine Art degree specialising in Jewellery and Metal Techniques from Stellenbosch University (2012), and furthered her studies at Alchimia Contemporary Jewellery School in Florence, Italy. In 2015, she established KVL Designs, through which she continues to produce individually handcrafted jewellery with a strong emphasis on material, form and craftsmanship.
