Thato Radebe

Johannesburg, South-Africa 

Thato Radebe is a Johannesburg-based jewellery designer and academic, currently serving as Head of the Department of Jewellery Design and Manufacture at the University of Johannesburg. He earned his MA in Jewellery Design from the University of Johannesburg in 2020 and has lectured at both the Durban University of Technology and the University of Johannesburg. His career also includes industry experience as a trainee merchant buyer for Sterns and American Swiss. Thato’s creative practice reflects his identity as a Black South African SeSotho jeweller, exploring how Fourth Industrial Revolution technologies can be integrated with indigenous design traditions to challenge Eurocentric definitions of value in jewellery. Thato returned to the University of Johannesburg in 2016 and was appointed Head of Department in the Department of Jewellery Design and Manufacture in 2024.
