Pieter J. Mathews

Pieter J. Mathews (South African, born 1967) is an architect, designer, curator and author whose work explores the intersection of architecture, art and design. After graduating from the University of Pretoria, he established Mathews and Associates Architects in 2000, developing a multidisciplinary practice that encompasses architecture, furniture, exhibitions and publishing. Alongside his architectural work, he has authored and edited numerous books on architecture and design, and in 2016 served as curator of the South African Pavilion at the Venice Architecture Biennale. His thoughtful approach to materiality, proportion and craftsmanship has earned widespread recognition, including the Suid-Afrikaanse Akademie vir Wetenskap en Kuns Medal of Honour for Visual Art (Architecture) in 2018. He completed a practice-based PhD in Architecture with specialisation in Design at the University of the Free State in 2023.
