Johann Hasse

Cape Colony

Active c.1750/1780

Coming from Brunswick, he arrived at the Cape in 1751 and served as a field-guard. He was later loaned out as a silversmith to Anna Dorothea van den Berg, the widow of the silversmith Matthias Lotter, and married her on 26 November 1752. In 1753, he became a burgher and assumed control of Lotter’s silversmithing business. Johan Hendrik Vos began his five-year apprenticeship under him in 1761, and it is also likely that his stepson, Johannes Casparus Lotter, completed his apprenticeship under his guidance.
