Johan Anton Bünning

Cape Colony

Active: 1758-1793

Johan Anton Bünning was a German born Cape silversmith. Bünning came to the Cape in 1758 as a soldier in the service of The Dutch East India Company. Married Helena of the Cape. As a member of the Lutheran Church, he took an active role in in having the Lutheran allowed freedom to worship at the Cape. It is surprising, therefore that he was commissioned by the Dutch Reformed Church of Stellenbosch to make an inkstand, the mounts and bells for two alms-bags, and a table bell in 1773.

His name is sometimes listed as Benning.
