Joani Groenewald

Stellenbosch, South-Africa 

Joani Groenewald is a lecturer in the Visual Arts Department at Stellenbosch University, as well as a jewellery designer, goldsmith, and artist. She graduated with a Bachelor in Visual Art (Creative Jewellery and Metal Design) from Stellenbosch University in 2009 and continued her technical training, qualifying as a goldsmith in 2011. She completed her Master’s in Visual Arts (cum laude) in 2015 at Stellenbosch University, and in March 2025, earned both a Doctorate in Visual Arts from Stellenbosch University and a Doctorate in Audiovisual and Visual Arts from Hasselt University. Joani’s work views contemporary jewellery as a medium to critically reflect on social and political environments, with research interests in memory studies, narrative, and translation, particularly in a South African context. Her art interrogates the stability of memory, translation, and narrative, while challenging traditional functions of jewellery, merging technical skill with conceptual inquiry to create work that is both research-driven and visually compelling.
