Strauss & Co held its first auction in March 2009, focussing on South African paintings, watercolours and sculpture. The company has significantly grown its departments and internationalised its focus since. It has staged a number of landmark auctions, including the 2012 house sale of the contents of Keerweder and South Africa’s first-ever auction devoted to contemporary art in 2018.
