Rare and Fine Wine from Italy and Spain going under the hammer
12 May 2023
An exquisite selection of highly sought-after fine and rare Italian and Spanish wine is going under the hammer in the Strauss & Co Virtual Live Auction taking place on Sunday, 14 May at 11am.
Italy is home to a myriad of wine styles and thousands of native grape varieties. Italian is considered to be one of the finest and most diverse producers in the world, with a history of winemaking dating back to ancient times.
The Tuscan line-up includes the big names from Bolgheri, Chianti and Brunello di Montalcino including, Antinori, Soldera, Masseto, Sassicaia and Biondi Santi. The Biondi Santi 1945 is particularly rare and special, recorked at the property and from a great vintage. The Piedmont list is equally historic with classic names such as Aldo Conterno, Giacomo Conterno, Gaja, Mascarello, and Produttori del Barbaresco. From across Italy there are more niche rarities from Galardi, Gravner, Pietradolce and more.
Other highlights include Masseto Toscano 2006 & 2007 and Tenuta San Guido Sassicaia1985 all receiving 100 Points from Robert Parker.
Spanish wines too have a long and rich history dating back thousands of years, and Spain is one of the largest wine-producing countries. The most popular Spanish wines include Rioja, Ribera del Duero and Priorat. Vega Sicilia is well represented with Alion, Pintia and Unico, while Muga, Lopez Heredia and La Rioja Alta from Rioja are included. The powerful line-up includes two 100 Pointer wines from Wine Advocate – Dominio de Pingus 2012 and Vega Sicilia Unico 1970!
You are more than welcome to attend the auction in person or bid virtually from your home on Auction day. The auction will take place live at the Strauss & Co Gauteng Office, 89 Central Street Houghton at 11am on Sunday, 14 May 2023.
