Strauss & Co offers private collection of Ardmore Ceramics

9 Jun 2026

In 1985, Fée Halsted founded Ardmore Ceramics on the Ardmore Farm in KZN. It has grown to become the largest ceramic art studio in South Africa. The studio began with her first student, Bonnie Ntshalintshali, and has since expanded to include around 80 artists. The studio has also become internationally renowned, its quirky and colourful designs, often inspired by nature and Zulu folklore, attracting attention as collectible ceramics in the US and Europe.

This June Strauss & Co presents a single owner private collection of Ardmore ceramics, with 237 lots of very accessible and desirable works, ranging from salt and pepper sets to vases and much more, including many of the flora and fauna subjects the Studio has become famous for. The collection presents works produced collaboratively with ceramicists and painters and is fully endorsed by Halsted. It also features several works inspired by Ntshalintshali, Halsted’s pioneering collaborator.

The Time online sale will run until 25 June, and selected highlights from the collection are on show at Strauss & Co’s Johannesburg offices, at 89 Central Street Houghton. Says senior art specialist Wilhelm van Rensburg, “Ardmore has established itself as a valuable auction staple, with consistently good results achieved for its studio ceramics over the years. Despite its desirability, this is the first standalone single-owner private collection to be brought to market, so we’re very excited.”
