About this Item

Pomerol 1998
1 (1 x 1) 750ml
The 1998 Right Bank harvest is considered among the finest Pomerol vintages of its decade, producing wines of exceptional concentration, aromatic fireworks and structured richness that have continued to develop with remarkable grace. Château L’Évangile’s 1998 earned 94/100 from Neal Martin, who found it a splendid and sensual Pomerol of beautiful definition with Cabernet Franc sitting prominently above the dark fruit, and 92/100 from Robert Parker, who praised its concentrated blackberry and raspberry fruit, its acacia-like floral character and its toffee, licorice and truffle complexity. L’Évangile is one of the most historically significant estates in Pomerol, its origins traceable to 1741 in the land registry as Fazilleau, renamed in the early nineteenth century, and acquired in 1990 by Domaines Barons de Rothschild, owners of Château Lafite Rothschild. The vineyard neighbours Château Pétrus to the north and is separated from Cheval Blanc to the south by a single road. The blend is 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc, aged in 70% new French oak.

Provenance

The late David Brice was a respected wine connoisseur, collector and co-founder of Brice and Burnett – The Fine Wine Specialists (formerly Wine Cellar). His lifelong passion for wine from all corners of the world wine, and generosity, helped develop a culture of fine wine in South Africa and beyond. Always with value and authenticity in mind, the collection spans a wide range of styles from leading producers and diverse regions. The wines were professionally imported under refrigeration and carefully stored at Brice and Burnett (formerly Wine Cellar) thereafter. Many of the producers are not available in South Africa and provide an excellent buying opportunity.

David studied and tasted Bordeaux more than any other region and he purchased en-primeur, or pre-release, for more than 3 decades. He bought the great vintages, loved magnums, and enjoyed the sweet wines of Sauternes. The cellar contains the famous names, but also highly regarded but lesser-known Chateaux and appellations.

For more detailed information on the lots, please feel free to contact Roland Peens (roland@winecellar.co.za). Roland spent many years sharing and enjoying these wines with David Brice and is happy to provide further insight into the collection.

Critics Ratings

“Stuffed with concentrated blackberry and raspberry fruit, with an acacia-like floral character that gives the wine even more complexity. Notes of toffee, licorice and truffles add to the aromatic fireworks. Full-bodied with superb purity and moderate tannin in the finish.” - Robert Parker, Wine Advocate, 92/100 (Apr 2001)

“Turning into a splendid Pomerol. A very expressive bouquet with Cabernet Franc sitting prominently above the blackberry and dark cherry fruit, hints of tobacco and black truffle. Medium-bodied and beautifully defined. Something sensual about this L’Évangile, which is normally one of the most structured wines from the Pomerol plateau.” - Neal Martin, Wine Advocate, 94/100 (Jul 2016)
