About this Item

Saint-Émilion 2004
2 (1 x 2) 750ml
The 2004 Saint-Émilion vintage produced wines of elegant, refined character and classical structure, and Château Pavie Macquin’s 2004 earned 93/100 from Robert Parker, who called it a dazzling success from the brilliant winemaking team of Stéphane Derenoncourt and Nicolas Thienpont, praising its noble nose of flowers, beef blood, black currants, licorice and truffles with stunning concentration and beautiful richness. Pavie Macquin is one of Saint-Émilion’s most historically significant estates, taking its name from Albert Macquin (1852–1911), the agricultural engineer who saved Bordeaux from phylloxera by pioneering the technique of grafting vines onto American rootstocks. Owned by Macquin’s descendants, the Corre family, and managed since 1994 by Nicolas Thienpont with Derenoncourt as consulting oenologist since 1990, the estate farms its 15 hectares on the clay-limestone plateau of Saint-Émilion adjacent to Pavie and Troplong Mondot using organic and biodynamic principles. The 2004 blend is 75% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon.

Provenance

The late David Brice was a respected wine connoisseur, collector and co-founder of Brice and Burnett – The Fine Wine Specialists (formerly Wine Cellar). His lifelong passion for wine from all corners of the world wine, and generosity, helped develop a culture of fine wine in South Africa and beyond. Always with value and authenticity in mind, the collection spans a wide range of styles from leading producers and diverse regions. The wines were professionally imported under refrigeration and carefully stored at Brice and Burnett (formerly Wine Cellar) thereafter. Many of the producers are not available in South Africa and provide an excellent buying opportunity.

David studied and tasted Bordeaux more than any other region and he purchased en-primeur, or pre-release, for more than 3 decades. He bought the great vintages, loved magnums, and enjoyed the sweet wines of Sauternes. The cellar contains the famous names, but also highly regarded but lesser-known Chateaux and appellations.

For more detailed information on the lots, please feel free to contact Roland Peens (roland@winecellar.co.za). Roland spent many years sharing and enjoying these wines with David Brice and is happy to provide further insight into the collection.

Critics Ratings

“A noble, complex nose of flowers, beef blood, black currants, licorice and truffles reveals surprising evolution. Full-bodied and powerful with stunning concentration, beautiful richness, sweet tannin and a long finish. A dazzling success from the brilliant winemaking team of Stéphane Derenoncourt and Nicolas Thienpont.” - Robert Parker, Wine Advocate, 93/100 (Jun 2007)
