About this Item

Fronsac 2010
4 (1 x 4) 750ml
The 2010 Fronsac harvest produced wines of exceptional mineral depth and freshness, considered among the finest in the appellation’s modern history, with the clay-limestone sites delivering wines of outstanding concentration and elegance. Château Fontenil’s 2010 earned 91/100 from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, 90/100 from Neal Martin and 16.5/20 from Jancis Robinson MW, a consensus across three of the world’s leading critics that reflects the outstanding quality of both the estate and the vintage. Fontenil is the home estate of Dany and Michel Rolland, the world’s most influential wine consultant, who acquired it in 1986 and rebuilt it from the ground up over thirteen years. The estate sits at Fronsac’s highest elevation on clay-limestone soils, its old vines averaging close to 45 years of age. The blend is 95% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon.

Provenance

The late David Brice was a respected wine connoisseur, collector and co-founder of Brice and Burnett – The Fine Wine Specialists (formerly Wine Cellar). His lifelong passion for wine from all corners of the world wine, and generosity, helped develop a culture of fine wine in South Africa and beyond. Always with value and authenticity in mind, the collection spans a wide range of styles from leading producers and diverse regions. The wines were professionally imported under refrigeration and carefully stored at Brice and Burnett (formerly Wine Cellar) thereafter. Many of the producers are not available in South Africa and provide an excellent buying opportunity.

David studied and tasted Bordeaux more than any other region and he purchased en-primeur, or pre-release, for more than 3 decades. He bought the great vintages, loved magnums, and enjoyed the sweet wines of Sauternes. The cellar contains the famous names, but also highly regarded but lesser-known Chateaux and appellations.

For more detailed information on the lots, please feel free to contact Roland Peens (roland@winecellar.co.za). Roland spent many years sharing and enjoying these wines with David Brice and is happy to provide further insight into the collection.

Critics Ratings

“Fresh and lifted with some rather obvious sweet purple notes underneath. Chewy end. Minerals on the finish.” - Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com, 16.5/20 (Apr 2011)

“Deep ruby in colour with a clean, rounded nose of small dark cherries, a touch of smoke and dark plum. Medium-bodied with supple tannins and an insistent grip. Fresh on the finish with Asian spices and tobacco.” - Neal Martin, Wine Advocate, 90/100 (Mar 2013)

“Loads of crushed rock and floral notes intermixed with raspberries, red currants and darker fruits such as blueberries. Medium to full-bodied with relatively soft tannins, good acidity, ripeness and focus. Should drink nicely for at least a decade.” - Robert Parker, Wine Advocate, 91/100 (Feb 2013)
