About this Item

Fronsac 2009
3 (1 x 3) 750ml
The 2009 Right Bank harvest produced wines of exceptional concentration and deep colour across Fronsac, with the appellation’s finest estates delivering a combination of richness and freshness that confirmed 2009 as one of the great vintages for the region. Château Fontenil’s 2009 earned 92/100 from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate and 16.5/20 from Jancis Robinson MW, who noted with pointed wit that Moueix must be kicking himself for having departed the Fronsac appellation. Fontenil is the home estate of Dany and Michel Rolland, acquired in 1986 in the commune of Saillans and rebuilt over thirteen years, sitting at Fronsac’s highest point on clay-limestone soils producing a Pomerol-like richness that Rolland considers among his finest expressions anywhere in the world. The blend is 95% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, aged in French oak.

Provenance

The late David Brice was a respected wine connoisseur, collector and co-founder of Brice and Burnett – The Fine Wine Specialists (formerly Wine Cellar). His lifelong passion for wine from all corners of the world wine, and generosity, helped develop a culture of fine wine in South Africa and beyond. Always with value and authenticity in mind, the collection spans a wide range of styles from leading producers and diverse regions. The wines were professionally imported under refrigeration and carefully stored at Brice and Burnett (formerly Wine Cellar) thereafter. Many of the producers are not available in South Africa and provide an excellent buying opportunity.

David studied and tasted Bordeaux more than any other region and he purchased en-primeur, or pre-release, for more than 3 decades. He bought the great vintages, loved magnums, and enjoyed the sweet wines of Sauternes. The cellar contains the famous names, but also highly regarded but lesser-known Chateaux and appellations.

For more detailed information on the lots, please feel free to contact Roland Peens (roland@winecellar.co.za). Roland spent many years sharing and enjoying these wines with David Brice and is happy to provide further insight into the collection.

Critics Ratings

“Very deep and fleshy but then lovely freshness. Moueix must be kicking himself for getting out of Fronsac!” - Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com, 16.5/20 (Apr 2010)

“Deep bluish purple with a full-bodied, layered and opulent character. Lots of black raspberry intermixed with blueberries and crushed rock. Two of the best wines from Dany and Michel Rolland are these vintages of Fontenil in Fronsac.” - Robert Parker, Wine Advocate, 92/100 (Dec 2011)
