About this Item

Moulis 2009
4 (1 x 4) 750ml
The 2009 Left Bank harvest produced wines of exceptional ripeness, concentration and aromatic richness, and Château Poujeaux’s 2009 earned 92/100 from both Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate and Neal Martin independently. Parker called it the finest Poujeaux he had tasted in over 33 years, describing it as a blockbuster that qualifies as one of the sleepers of the vintage, with a superb nose of subtle smoke, graphite and blueberry and an unctuously textured, full-bodied palate. Neal Martin found it a classically composed Médoc of sous-bois, cedar and blackberry with a saline, marine-influenced finish of real character. Poujeaux is widely regarded as one of the finest Cru Bourgeois estates in the Médoc, its single unbroken vineyard block on the gravel slopes of Grand-Poujeaux in Moulis named since the Middle Ages, when it belonged to Gaston de l’Isle, owner of Château Latour. The estate was acquired by the Cuvelier family in 2008, who also own Clos Fourtet in Saint-Émilion and engaged Stéphane Derenoncourt and Nicolas Thienpont as consultants. The 2009 blend is 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot with Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, cropped at 35 hectolitres per hectare.

Provenance

The late David Brice was a respected wine connoisseur, collector and co-founder of Brice and Burnett – The Fine Wine Specialists (formerly Wine Cellar). His lifelong passion for wine from all corners of the world wine, and generosity, helped develop a culture of fine wine in South Africa and beyond. Always with value and authenticity in mind, the collection spans a wide range of styles from leading producers and diverse regions. The wines were professionally imported under refrigeration and carefully stored at Brice and Burnett (formerly Wine Cellar) thereafter. Many of the producers are not available in South Africa and provide an excellent buying opportunity.

David studied and tasted Bordeaux more than any other region and he purchased en-primeur, or pre-release, for more than 3 decades. He bought the great vintages, loved magnums, and enjoyed the sweet wines of Sauternes. The cellar contains the famous names, but also highly regarded but lesser-known Chateaux and appellations.

For more detailed information on the lots, please feel free to contact Roland Peens (roland@winecellar.co.za). Roland spent many years sharing and enjoying these wines with David Brice and is happy to provide further insight into the collection.

Critics Ratings

“Deep purple, with a nose of subtle smoke, graphite, blueberry and black raspberry fruit as well as some spring flowers. Full-bodied, rich, inky and unctuously textured. The finest wine I have tasted from Poujeaux over the last 33 years. A sleeper of the vintage and a wine to seek out.” - Robert Parker, Wine Advocate, 92/100 (Dec 2011)

“A nicely composed, classic bouquet with sous-bois and cedar-infused blackberry fruit. Very Médoc in style. Medium-bodied with a saline entry, fine tannins with that marine influence impinging the firm, dry black fruit with a touch of burnt toast on the finish.” - Neal Martin, Wine Advocate, 92/100 (Jul 2013)
