About this Item

Saint-Julien 2002
4 (1 x 4) 750ml
The 2002 Left Bank harvest, rescued by an exceptional September after a difficult summer, produced some of the most classically structured and long-lived wines of the decade. Château Léoville Barton’s 2002 is considered one of the finest wines of the vintage, earning 92/100 from Robert Parker, who called it even better from bottle than from cask and one of the finest wines of the vintage, and 91/100 from Neal Martin, who found its dense, taciturn fruit and broodingly backward structure exactly the classic style that has built this estate’s devoted following. Parker praised its extraordinarily good quality-to-price ratio, a characteristic that has defined Léoville Barton across decades. The estate, owned by the Barton family since 1826 and managed by Lilian Barton Sartorius following Anthony Barton’s death in 2022, produces no white wine and ages its red in 50% new French oak. The blend is 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot and 8% Cabernet Franc.

Provenance

The late David Brice was a respected wine connoisseur, collector and co-founder of Brice and Burnett – The Fine Wine Specialists (formerly Wine Cellar). His lifelong passion for wine from all corners of the world wine, and generosity, helped develop a culture of fine wine in South Africa and beyond. Always with value and authenticity in mind, the collection spans a wide range of styles from leading producers and diverse regions. The wines were professionally imported under refrigeration and carefully stored at Brice and Burnett (formerly Wine Cellar) thereafter. Many of the producers are not available in South Africa and provide an excellent buying opportunity.

David studied and tasted Bordeaux more than any other region and he purchased en-primeur, or pre-release, for more than 3 decades. He bought the great vintages, loved magnums, and enjoyed the sweet wines of Sauternes. The cellar contains the famous names, but also highly regarded but lesser-known Chateaux and appellations.

For more detailed information on the lots, please feel free to contact Roland Peens (roland@winecellar.co.za). Roland spent many years sharing and enjoying these wines with David Brice and is happy to provide further insight into the collection.

Critics Ratings

“A rather taciturn nose but there is obviously good fruit intensity coiled up inside, blackberry, graphite and a touch of iodine. The palate is full-bodied with a lot of dry extract, tannic, austere and rather stoic. Very classic in style, but certainly good breeding that will blossom in the future.” - Neal Martin, Wine Advocate, 91/100 (Jan 2010)

“Even better from bottle than from cask, and one of the finest wines of the vintage. Wonderfully sweet notes of charcoal, fresh mushrooms, smoke, earth, leather, cassis and cedar. Full-bodied, highly extracted, broodingly backward and deep. Built for the long term.” - Robert Parker, Wine Advocate, 92/100 (Apr 2005)
