About this Item

Pomerol 2001
6 (1 x 6) 750ml
The 2001 Right Bank harvest produced wines of genuine depth and complexity across Pomerol, with the finest estates delivering a vintage of real charm and accessible character that continues to reward with age. Château de Sales is one of the most historically remarkable estates in all of Bordeaux, the largest vineyard in the Pomerol appellation at 47.6 hectares and the property of the same family, the Lambert family, since 1464, a continuity of ownership spanning over five and a half centuries that is virtually unmatched in the Bordeaux wine world. The estate’s grand château, one of the very few genuine château buildings in the entire Pomerol appellation, was constructed in the early seventeenth century. Parker described the 2001 as hedonistic and plush with caramel-infused cherry and good expansiveness, while Neal Martin found it earthy, structured and masculine with a foursquare, classic character. The blend is 73% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon and 12% Cabernet Franc, aged in French oak on gravel, sand and clay soils with iron oxide subsoil.

Provenance

This lot comes from the late Harold Eedes, who served as Managing Director of Wine Magazine for nine years. A highly respected and much-loved figure in the South African wine industry, Harold assembled a thoughtful collection that includes a number of mature Bordeaux wines. The wines have been professionally stored under temperature-controlled conditions at Brice & Burnett since acquisition.

Critics Ratings

“Soft, caramel-infused cherry candy-like aromas jump from the glass of this dark ruby/purple-tinged, hedonistic 2001. Plush, with good expansiveness, sweetness and a sexy, up-front, opulent personality.” - Robert Parker, Wine Advocate (Jun 2004)

“An earthy bouquet with touches of leather, a little violet and graphite. The palate is medium-bodied, quite dry and leafy on the mid-palate, firm tannins with a masculine, foursquare finish.” - Neal Martin, Wine Advocate (Sep 2013)
