About this Item

Médoc 2009
2 (1 x 2) 750ml
The 2009 Left Bank harvest is widely regarded as one of the greatest of the modern era, producing wines of exceptional concentration, depth and aromatic complexity across the Médoc. Chapelle de Potensac’s 2009 earned 16/20 from Julia Harding MW, who found it dark fruited, savoury and tightly wound with real complexity still to unwind, while Neal Martin described it as precise and tense with a lively, almost pinched concentration typical of the vintage at its best. Chapelle de Potensac is the second wine of Château Potensac, one of the most respected estates in the northern Médoc, owned by the Delon family responsible for Léoville-Las Cases in Saint-Julien. The blend draws on gravelly clay sand terroir and is built around Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, aged in French oak.

Provenance

The late David Brice was a respected wine connoisseur, collector and co-founder of Brice and Burnett – The Fine Wine Specialists (formerly Wine Cellar). His lifelong passion for wine from all corners of the world wine, and generosity, helped develop a culture of fine wine in South Africa and beyond. Always with value and authenticity in mind, the collection spans a wide range of styles from leading producers and diverse regions. The wines were professionally imported under refrigeration and carefully stored at Brice and Burnett (formerly Wine Cellar) thereafter. Many of the producers are not available in South Africa and provide an excellent buying opportunity.

David studied and tasted Bordeaux more than any other region and he purchased en-primeur, or pre-release, for more than 3 decades. He bought the great vintages, loved magnums, and enjoyed the sweet wines of Sauternes. The cellar contains the famous names, but also highly regarded but lesser-known Chateaux and appellations.

For more detailed information on the lots, please feel free to contact Roland Peens (roland@winecellar.co.za). Roland spent many years sharing and enjoying these wines with David Brice and is happy to provide further insight into the collection.

Critics Ratings

“Dark fruited and a little savoury, the fruit ripe but not over-sweet or overripe. Some vanilla and cedar still showing, along with a hint of leather. Lots going on here. Still very young on the palate, with the sweet fruit and the acidity needing even a little longer to become subtle and entwined. Juicy but still firm in the tannins.” - Julia Harding MW, JancisRobinson.com, 16/20 (Dec 2015)

“A tightly wound bouquet of blackberry, sous-bois and cedar that unwinds nicely in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with a crisp seam of acidity. Lively in the mouth, tightly wound and almost pinched on the finish, but precise and tense.” - Neal Martin, Wine Advocate (Jul 2013)
