A Chinese blue and white porcelain plate, decorated with cranes in a landscape setting
Notes
Painted in underglaze cobalt blue, the central well is decorated with cranes in flight and standing amongst stylised foliage, enclosed by a border of wave and geometric motifs. Cranes are auspicious symbols in Chinese decorative arts, associated with longevity, immortality and scholarly virtue, making wares of this type both decorative and symbolic in function.
