A Chinese blue and white porcelain umbrella stand, 19th century
height: 59cm; diameter: 21,5cm

Notes

A tall cylindrical porcelain umbrella stand decorated in underglaze cobalt blue with a five-clawed dragon amongst peonies and foliate scrolls. The rim is bordered with a geometric diaper band with plum blossom roundels, and the base with a stylised wave border above an unglazed foot. The dragon symbolises imperial authority, prosperity and protection, while the peony represents wealth, honour and flourishing in Chinese decorative tradition.
