About this Item
A Chinese blue and white porcelain ginger jar and cover decorated with prunus branches, Kangxi period, 1662-1722
Notes
The jar is of classic ovoid ginger jar form, painted in underglaze blue with blossoming prunus branches reserved against a deep cobalt ground. The prunus (plum blossom) is a highly symbolic motif in Chinese decorative arts, representing resilience, renewal and the arrival of spring, as it flowers in the coldest months of winter. The jar is fitted with a pierced, carved wood cover of scrolling cloud-like form.
