About this Item
A Southeast Asian brown-glazed stoneware Martaban storage jar with applied dragon decoration
height: 40cm; diameter: 28cm
Notes
This large Martaban-type storage jar is potted in heavy stoneware and covered with a rich brown iron glaze. The body is decorated in high relief with sinuous dragons, traditionally symbols of power, protection and good fortune. Martaban jars were widely used across Southeast Asia and China for the storage and transport of water, oils, spices and other trade goods. The applied loop handles around the shoulder allowed ropes to be tied for carrying and shipping, reflecting the jar’s practical role in maritime trade.
Provenance
