About this Item

Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2012
2 (1 x 2) 750ml

Château de Beaucastel is one of the great estates of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, the Perrin family's celebrated property, famed for using all thirteen permitted grape varieties and for structured, ageworthy, biodynamic reds. 2012 was a ripe, well-balanced southern Rhône vintage, more successful than the difficult 2011. Jancis Robinson gave it 18 out of 20, James Molesworth from Wine Spectator gave it a rating of 95, Joe Czerwinski from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate gave it 94, and Josh Raynolds from Vinous gave it 93.

Provenance

The late David Brice was a respected wine connoisseur, collector and co-founder of Brice and Burnett – The Fine Wine Specialists (formerly Wine Cellar). His lifelong passion for wine from all corners of the world wine, and generosity, helped develop a culture of fine wine in South Africa and beyond. Always with value and authenticity in mind, the collection spans a wide range of styles from leading producers and diverse regions. The wines were professionally imported under refrigeration and carefully stored at Brice and Burnett (formerly Wine Cellar) thereafter. Many of the producers are not available in South Africa and provide an excellent buying opportunity.

For more detailed information on the lots, please feel free to contact Roland Peens (roland@briceandburnett.co.za). Roland spent many years sharing and enjoying these wines with David Brice and is happy to provide further insight into the collection.

Critics Ratings

"Very dark crimson. Vibrant colour is almost black. Black olives and smoked bacon. Extremely vibrant on the nose too. Luscious ripe fruit on the front palate almost completely covers the tannins. Really quite remarkable. What a different wine from the 2011! Sumptuous." - Jancis Robinson, JancisRobinson.com, 18/20 (Dec 2013)

"Warm raspberry and boysenberry confiture aromas and flavors are dominant in this lush, inviting style, but there's plenty of dried star anise, bay leaf, licorice root, worn leather and roasted juniper notes to fill out the chorus. The finish turns youthfully grippy, with a tarry edge holding sway and adding serious length. Try now, but cellar for maximum effect." - James Molesworth, Wine Spectator, 95/100 (Nov 2015)

"Beaucastel's 2012 Chateauneuf du Pape is drinking well at the moment, with at least several more good years ahead of it. Silky and supple in feel, it easily marries hints of ripe cherries, dried spices and fine glove leather into a harmonious whole that deftly combines fruity and savory elements, then lingers elegantly on the finish." - Joe Czerwinski, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, 94/100 (Oct 2023)

"Opaque ruby. Potent, mineral-laced raspberry and cherry aromas are complicated by suave floral and spice qualities, picking up white pepper and cola accents with air. Seamless, round and sweet on the palate, offering intense red berry preserve and floral pastille flavors with a touch of allspice. Finishes sappy and precise, with velvety tannins and a late jolt of cherry compote." - Josh Raynolds, Vinous, 93/100 (Feb 2015)
