Bouchard Père et Fils

Chambertin-Clos de Bèze 2017

A unique opportunity to acquire wines that define Burgundy’s legacy
About the Session

These wines have been sourced directly from the ancient 15th Century cellars of Bouchard Père et Fils. They were imported into South Africa in March 2026 by Great Domaines via refrigerated container (reefer), ensuring optimal preservation throughout transit. These historic bottles, among the last remaining examples from the 20th and early 21st centuries, represent some of the Domaine’s most important cuvées. Fine vintages across the Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune back to 1972 have been selected, checked and captured on the Bouchard database, with a dedicated neck proof tag confirming their recent release from the Bouchard cellars. Bottles from the 2009 vintage and older were also waxed in anticipation of their recent release.

About this Item

Chambertin-Clos de Bèze 2017
1 (1 x 1) 3000ml
The 2017 Côte de Nuits harvest was defined by the dramatic spring frosts that severely reduced yields across Burgundy's finest vineyards, yet the small quantities that achieved full ripeness delivered a quality of exceptional aromatic precision and structural elegance that has drawn outstanding critical regard for this exceptional Grand Cru. Bouchard Père & Fils' 2017 Chambertin-Clos de Bèze, offered here in the rare jeroboam format, drew praise from James Suckling at JamesSuckling.com,and 17++ from Richard Hemming MW at JancisRobinson.com, the jeroboam format ensuring a uniquely extended and superb ageing trajectory for one of Burgundy's most exalted appellations. Chambertin-Clos de Bèze is one of the supreme Grands Crus of Gevrey-Chambertin, founded by the monks of the Abbey of Bèze in the 7th century and the only Grand Cru in Burgundy permitted to append the name Chambertin to its own, its ancient limestone and clay soils producing wines of exceptional aromatic complexity and multi-decade longevity. The wine is produced from 100% Pinot Noir, aged 12 to 14 months in French oak with 40 to 50% new barrels.

Critics Ratings

“From bottle, the 2017 Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru wafts from the glass with pretty aromas of cassis, cherries, black tea, rose petals and spices. On the palate, it's full-bodied, supple and satiny, with a textural attack, a fleshy, succulent core of fruit and a pure and expansive finish. Open-knit and charming, the wine's powdery, melting tannins are largely concealed. This is a generous, head-turning Clos de Bèze that delivers immense pleasure, albeit comparatively little in the way of profundity.” - William Kelley, Wine Advocate, 94/100 (Apr 2019)

“Fairly straightforward after their Domaine Chambertin, with all the flavour perhaps still under lock and key. Plenty of concentration on the palate with a thick, fibrous texture on the finish. A long-term prospect.” - Richard Hemming MW, JancisRobinson.com, ++17/20 (Jan 2019)

“The nose has a restrained, mineral edge. Gun-smoke and flinty notes, wild herbs and sous bois with super fine cherries, as well as crushed red flowers. All very delicate this early in its journey. The palate has a sleek and appealingly powerful feel that expands fully on fine, long and fresh tannins. The regal finish is already impressive.” - James Suckling, JamesSuckling.com (Jan 2019)
