Bouchard Père et Fils

Chapelle-Chambertin 1978

A unique opportunity to acquire wines that define Burgundy’s legacy
About the Session

These wines have been sourced directly from the ancient 15th Century cellars of Bouchard Père et Fils. They were imported into South Africa in March 2026 by Great Domaines via refrigerated container (reefer), ensuring optimal preservation throughout transit. These historic bottles, among the last remaining examples from the 20th and early 21st centuries, represent some of the Domaine’s most important cuvées. Fine vintages across the Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune back to 1972 have been selected, checked and captured on the Bouchard database, with a dedicated neck proof tag confirming their recent release from the Bouchard cellars. Bottles from the 2009 vintage and older were also waxed in anticipation of their recent release.

About this Item

Chapelle-Chambertin 1978
1 (1 x 1) 750ml
The 1978 Burgundy harvest is celebrated as one of the finest of its decade, a year of exceptional ripeness, fine structure and remarkable aromatic depth that has been consistently praised as a benchmark vintage for the Côte de Nuits, producing wines of genuine complexity and a longevity that continues to astonish those fortunate enough to encounter them in this advanced state of evolution. Bouchard Père & Fils' 1978 Chapelle-Chambertin is one of the most remarkable museum pieces in the estate's historic portfolio. Chapelle-Chambertin is one of Gevrey-Chambertin's nine Grands Crus, its name recalling the chapel of Notre-Dame de Bèze that once stood at the heart of the vineyard, producing wines of refined elegance and fine aromatic complexity on well-drained limestone and marl soils in a privileged position on the finest slope of the village. The wine is produced from 100% Pinot Noir, aged in French oak.

Critics Ratings

“Intense and deep bouquet (flavours of fruits, spices and light oak). Perfect marriage of grace and liveliness, of finesse and silkiness. A wine of remarkable generosity and potential.” - Bouchard Père & Fils, producer tasting notes, 1978 vintage
