About this Item

Sauternes 2009
3 (1 x 3) 375ml
The 2009 Sauternes harvest produced wines of exceptional richness and full, generous concentration driven by outstanding botrytis conditions in a warm and abundantly ripe year. Château Raymond-Lafon’s 2009 earned 17/20 from Jancis Robinson MW, who found it burnished, lively and refreshingly not too sweet, with leathery tannins on the finish and a deliberate restraint that sets it apart from the more flamboyant expressions of the vintage. Neal Martin awarded 93/100, praising its superb seam of acidity running from start to finish, lovely clarity and freshness on the tropical fruit-tinged finish. Raymond-Lafon is one of Sauternes’ most celebrated unclassified estates, its 20 hectares located immediately north of Château d’Yquem and often described as a mini Yquem in its quality ambitions. The estate was founded in 1850 and purchased in 1972 by Pierre Meslier, who had served as managing director of Château d’Yquem from 1963, bringing the same meticulous techniques to his own property. Today the estate is managed by his three children. The blend is 80% Sémillon and 20% Sauvignon Blanc.

Provenance

The late David Brice was a respected wine connoisseur, collector and co-founder of Brice and Burnett – The Fine Wine Specialists (formerly Wine Cellar). His lifelong passion for wine from all corners of the world wine, and generosity, helped develop a culture of fine wine in South Africa and beyond. Always with value and authenticity in mind, the collection spans a wide range of styles from leading producers and diverse regions. The wines were professionally imported under refrigeration and carefully stored at Brice and Burnett (formerly Wine Cellar) thereafter. Many of the producers are not available in South Africa and provide an excellent buying opportunity.

David studied and tasted Bordeaux more than any other region and he purchased en-primeur, or pre-release, for more than 3 decades. He bought the great vintages, loved magnums, and enjoyed the sweet wines of Sauternes. The cellar contains the famous names, but also highly regarded but lesser-known Chateaux and appellations.

For more detailed information on the lots, please feel free to contact Roland Peens (roland@winecellar.co.za). Roland spent many years sharing and enjoying these wines with David Brice and is happy to provide further insight into the collection.

Critics Ratings

“Burnished and a bit metallic in a good way, because it makes it more refreshing. Lively. Leathery tannins on the end. Definitely deliberately not too sweet.” - Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com, 17/20 (Mar 2019)

“A little more oak on the nose compared to its peers, which tends to obscure the fruit aromatics at the moment. The palate is much better with a crisp, taut entry and a superb seam of acidity that runs from start to finish. Great clarity and freshness on the tropical fruit-tinged finish. Lovely, but give it a couple of years for the aromatics to settle.” - Neal Martin, Wine Advocate, 93/100 (Feb 2013)
