About this Item

Sauternes 2009
3 (1 x 3) 375ml
The 2009 Sauternes harvest produced wines of full, rich concentration driven by exceptional botrytis development in a warm, generously ripe year, delivering a style of opulent, spiced sweetness that continues to develop with age. Château de Myrat’s 2009, offered here in half bottle, earned 92/100 from Lisa Perrotti-Brown of Wine Advocate, who found it spicy, nutty and maturing with fine oily length, and 90/100 from Neal Martin, who praised its purity and naive charm. De Myrat is one of the most intriguing stories in Sauternes, a classified Second Growth whose proprietor famously uprooted every vine in 1976 before his sons Xavier and Pierre replanted in 1988 and produced their debut vintage in 1990. The 2009 shows the progressive complexity of vines now entering proper maturity. The blend is predominantly Sémillon with Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle.

Provenance

The late David Brice was a respected wine connoisseur, collector and co-founder of Brice and Burnett – The Fine Wine Specialists (formerly Wine Cellar). His lifelong passion for wine from all corners of the world wine, and generosity, helped develop a culture of fine wine in South Africa and beyond. Always with value and authenticity in mind, the collection spans a wide range of styles from leading producers and diverse regions. The wines were professionally imported under refrigeration and carefully stored at Brice and Burnett (formerly Wine Cellar) thereafter. Many of the producers are not available in South Africa and provide an excellent buying opportunity.

David studied and tasted Bordeaux more than any other region and he purchased en-primeur, or pre-release, for more than 3 decades. He bought the great vintages, loved magnums, and enjoyed the sweet wines of Sauternes. The cellar contains the famous names, but also highly regarded but lesser-known Chateaux and appellations.

For more detailed information on the lots, please feel free to contact Roland Peens (roland@winecellar.co.za). Roland spent many years sharing and enjoying these wines with David Brice and is happy to provide further insight into the collection.

Critics Ratings

“Pale to medium gold with an evolving, nutty nose of baked apricots, dried pineapple, mango and honey with spice nuances. The palate is full, rich, spicy, nutty and maturing, finishing long and oily.” - Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate, 92/100 (Mar 2019)

“Noticeable vanilla-tinged oak waiting to be subsumed, high-toned and generous. A playful, citric Sauternes of purity rather than power. The finish displays decent balance and a naïve charm.” - Neal Martin, Wine Advocate, 90/100 (Feb 2013)
