About this Item

Climens
Barsac 2007
2 (1 x 2) 750ml
The 2007 Sauternes and Barsac harvest is broadly considered the finest vintage in the appellation since 2001, producing wines of exceptional concentration, balance and longevity driven by ideal botrytis conditions and excellent natural acidity. Château Climens’s 2007 earned 98/100 from Neal Martin in Wine Advocate, who called it a slice of heaven in a glass of spellbinding purity and botrytised depth, and 18/20 from Jancis Robinson MW, who found it the finest 2007 she had tasted at the time of review, with wild flowers, honey and mandarin peel and a refreshing, bitter finish. Bérénice Lurton, who has guided this Premier Cru Classé estate since 1992 and converted it fully to biodynamic viticulture, described 2007 as one of the greatest vintages she has overseen. The wine is produced entirely from Sémillon harvested in multiple selective passes from Climens’s 31 hectares in the commune of Barsac.

Provenance

The late David Brice was a respected wine connoisseur, collector and co-founder of Brice and Burnett – The Fine Wine Specialists (formerly Wine Cellar). His lifelong passion for wine from all corners of the world wine, and generosity, helped develop a culture of fine wine in South Africa and beyond. Always with value and authenticity in mind, the collection spans a wide range of styles from leading producers and diverse regions. The wines were professionally imported under refrigeration and carefully stored at Brice and Burnett (formerly Wine Cellar) thereafter. Many of the producers are not available in South Africa and provide an excellent buying opportunity.

David studied and tasted Bordeaux more than any other region and he purchased en-primeur, or pre-release, for more than 3 decades. He bought the great vintages, loved magnums, and enjoyed the sweet wines of Sauternes. The cellar contains the famous names, but also highly regarded but lesser-known Chateaux and appellations.

For more detailed information on the lots, please feel free to contact Roland Peens (roland@winecellar.co.za). Roland spent many years sharing and enjoying these wines with David Brice and is happy to provide further insight into the collection.

Critics Ratings

“Very pure with honey, a touch of orange blossom and quince. The palate is very well-balanced with great purity and a dash of spice as well as a lovely viscous, botrytis-laden finish that possesses awesome weight and persistency. A slice of heaven in a glass, but it definitely needs time to reveal its true potential.” - Neal Martin, Wine Advocate, 98/100 (Dec 2011)

“Really exciting nose, so much going on. Wild flowers, honey, mandarin peel. So far by far the best 2007 tasted. Slightly bitter, refreshing note on the end. Long and interesting. Great stuff.” - Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com, 18/20 (Oct 2009)
