About this Item

Sauternes 2015
6 (1 x 6) 750ml
The 2015 Sauternes harvest produced wines of exceptional elegance, tension and botrytis purity, widely regarded as one of the finest vintages in the appellation since 2001. Château Rieussec’s 2015 earned 96/100 from Neal Martin, who called it simply a class act, and a remarkable 19/20 from Jancis Robinson MW, who found it serious, thrilling, rich and concentrated with a flirtatious undertow of extraordinary quality. Rieussec is one of the most historically significant Premier Cru Classé estates in Sauternes, its origins with the Carmelite monks of Langon in the eighteenth century, classified First Growth in 1855, and acquired in 1984 by Domaines Barons de Rothschild, owners of Château Lafite Rothschild, who built a new cellar in 1989 and dramatically elevated both quality and consistency across the following decades. The estate’s 93 hectares border Château d’Yquem to the west. The blend is 90% Sémillon, 7% Sauvignon Blanc and 3% Muscadelle, aged 18 to 24 months in French oak.

Provenance

The late David Brice was a respected wine connoisseur, collector and co-founder of Brice and Burnett – The Fine Wine Specialists (formerly Wine Cellar). His lifelong passion for wine from all corners of the world wine, and generosity, helped develop a culture of fine wine in South Africa and beyond. Always with value and authenticity in mind, the collection spans a wide range of styles from leading producers and diverse regions. The wines were professionally imported under refrigeration and carefully stored at Brice and Burnett (formerly Wine Cellar) thereafter. Many of the producers are not available in South Africa and provide an excellent buying opportunity.

David studied and tasted Bordeaux more than any other region and he purchased en-primeur, or pre-release, for more than 3 decades. He bought the great vintages, loved magnums, and enjoyed the sweet wines of Sauternes. The cellar contains the famous names, but also highly regarded but lesser-known Chateaux and appellations.

For more detailed information on the lots, please feel free to contact Roland Peens (roland@winecellar.co.za). Roland spent many years sharing and enjoying these wines with David Brice and is happy to provide further insight into the collection.

Critics Ratings

“More backward on the nose compared to the Carmes de Rieussec, with scents of honey, freshly sliced pineapple and almond, a hint of acacia and white flower gently unfurling in the glass. The palate is well balanced, quite tensile with greater mineralité and finer delineation toward the finish. Simply a class act.” - Neal Martin, Wine Advocate, 96/100 (Mar 2018)

“Serious, savoury nose. Masses of weight and serious intent. Really quite thrilling. Flirtatious undertow. So rich and concentrated!” - Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com, 19/20 (Mar 2025)
