About this Item

Sauternes 2010
5 (1 x 5) 375ml
The 2010 Sauternes harvest produced wines of exceptional mineral tension and vibrant acidity, considered among the finest in the appellation’s recent history for their precision and freshness rather than unctuousness alone. Château Guiraud’s 2010, offered here in half bottle, earned 93/100 from both Neal Martin and Lisa Perrotti-Brown of Wine Advocate independently, and 17.5/20 from Jancis Robinson MW, who found it muscular, lively and appetising with a freshness capable of accompanying a meal. Guiraud is a First Growth Premier Cru Classé of Sauternes, the first in its classification to receive full organic certification in 2011, owned since 2006 by a four-man partnership including Olivier Bernard of Domaine de Chevalier and Stephan von Neipperg of Canon La Gaffelière. The blend is 65% Sémillon and 35% Sauvignon Blanc, notable for one of the highest proportions of Sauvignon Blanc among all Sauternes Premier Crus.

Provenance

The late David Brice was a respected wine connoisseur, collector and co-founder of Brice and Burnett – The Fine Wine Specialists (formerly Wine Cellar). His lifelong passion for wine from all corners of the world wine, and generosity, helped develop a culture of fine wine in South Africa and beyond. Always with value and authenticity in mind, the collection spans a wide range of styles from leading producers and diverse regions. The wines were professionally imported under refrigeration and carefully stored at Brice and Burnett (formerly Wine Cellar) thereafter. Many of the producers are not available in South Africa and provide an excellent buying opportunity.

David studied and tasted Bordeaux more than any other region and he purchased en-primeur, or pre-release, for more than 3 decades. He bought the great vintages, loved magnums, and enjoyed the sweet wines of Sauternes. The cellar contains the famous names, but also highly regarded but lesser-known Chateaux and appellations.

For more detailed information on the lots, please feel free to contact Roland Peens (roland@winecellar.co.za). Roland spent many years sharing and enjoying these wines with David Brice and is happy to provide further insight into the collection.

Critics Ratings

“More Zen-like on the nose compared to the 2009, with more minerality coming through, tense and citric. Surprising viscosity on the entry with a fine bead of acidity. Plenty of apricot and dried honey with a lovely caressing texture. Great potential.” - Neal Martin, Wine Advocate, 93/100 (Jun 2013)

“Explodes from the glass with baked pineapple, lemon tart and apple pie scents plus suggestions of acacia honey, jasmine tea, musk perfume and marzipan. Bold tropical flavours with a lively line of freshness and a long, perfumed finish.” - Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate, 93/100 (Mar 2020)

“Good freshness and attack. Not one of the sweetest. But very appetising. A wine you could drink with a meal. Muscular. Lively.” - Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com, 17.5/20 (Feb 2014)
