About this Item

Margaux 2000
1 (1 x 1) 750ml
The 2000 Left Bank harvest is broadly regarded as one of the greatest vintages of the last century, and Château Rauzan-Gassies’s 2000 earned 90/100 from Robert Parker, who called it the finest wine he had tasted from this estate in over four decades, praising its dense purple colour, sweet perfume of black cherry liqueur, cassis, graphite, licorice and incense, and its full-bodied, concentrated, broodingly backward character built for patient connoisseurs. Rauzan-Gassies is one of the oldest Second Growths in Margaux, its origins rooted in the fourteenth century noble house of Gassies, with de Rauzan acquiring the seigneury in 1661 and establishing the vineyard’s reputation. The estate was divided in 1763, giving birth to the Rauzan-Gassies name, and has been owned by the Quié family since 1946. At 28.5 hectares on deep gravel and sandy soils adjacent to Kirwan and Château Margaux, the estate has long been acknowledged as an underperformer relative to its terroir, with recent vintages finally beginning to reflect the true potential of this magnificent site. The blend is 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot.

Provenance

The late David Brice was a respected wine connoisseur, collector and co-founder of Brice and Burnett – The Fine Wine Specialists (formerly Wine Cellar). His lifelong passion for wine from all corners of the world wine, and generosity, helped develop a culture of fine wine in South Africa and beyond. Always with value and authenticity in mind, the collection spans a wide range of styles from leading producers and diverse regions. The wines were professionally imported under refrigeration and carefully stored at Brice and Burnett (formerly Wine Cellar) thereafter. Many of the producers are not available in South Africa and provide an excellent buying opportunity.

David studied and tasted Bordeaux more than any other region and he purchased en-primeur, or pre-release, for more than 3 decades. He bought the great vintages, loved magnums, and enjoyed the sweet wines of Sauternes. The cellar contains the famous names, but also highly regarded but lesser-known Chateaux and appellations.

For more detailed information on the lots, please feel free to contact Roland Peens (roland@winecellar.co.za). Roland spent many years sharing and enjoying these wines with David Brice and is happy to provide further insight into the collection.

Critics Ratings

“The finest wine I have tasted from this estate in over four decades. A dense purple-coloured 2000 with a sweet perfume of black cherry liqueur intermixed with cassis, graphite, licorice and incense. Full-bodied and concentrated, with high tannin and loads of extract. A serious, broodingly backward, high class offering for patient connoisseurs.” - Robert Parker, Wine Advocate, 90/100 (Apr 2003)
