About this Item

Saint-Julien 1994
1 (1 x 1) 750ml
The 1994 Left Bank harvest was a challenging vintage that produced wines of firm structure and austere tannin, with the finest Cabernet Sauvignon dominant estates rewarding those who cellared with patience. Château Léoville Barton’s 1994 earned 90/100 from Robert Parker, who called it a classic, serious, blockbuster Médoc with the dense purple colour, closed aromatics and massive flavour richness of the old non-compromised style, and 90/100 from Jeff Leve, who found it fully ready and showing a lovely tobacco, forest leaf and cigar box character with fresh, bright fruit. Léoville Barton is one of the most historically significant Second Growths in Saint-Julien, owned by the Barton family since Hugh Barton purchased the property in 1826, having arrived in Bordeaux from Ireland in 1722. Uniquely, the estate has no château of its own - the wines are made at neighbouring Château Langoa Barton. The blend is 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot and 8% Cabernet Franc, aged in 50% new French oak.

Provenance

The late David Brice was a respected wine connoisseur, collector and co-founder of Brice and Burnett – The Fine Wine Specialists (formerly Wine Cellar). His lifelong passion for wine from all corners of the world wine, and generosity, helped develop a culture of fine wine in South Africa and beyond. Always with value and authenticity in mind, the collection spans a wide range of styles from leading producers and diverse regions. The wines were professionally imported under refrigeration and carefully stored at Brice and Burnett (formerly Wine Cellar) thereafter. Many of the producers are not available in South Africa and provide an excellent buying opportunity.

David studied and tasted Bordeaux more than any other region and he purchased en-primeur, or pre-release, for more than 3 decades. He bought the great vintages, loved magnums, and enjoyed the sweet wines of Sauternes. The cellar contains the famous names, but also highly regarded but lesser-known Chateaux and appellations.

For more detailed information on the lots, please feel free to contact Roland Peens (roland@winecellar.co.za). Roland spent many years sharing and enjoying these wines with David Brice and is happy to provide further insight into the collection.

Critics Ratings

“A classic, serious Bordeaux for collectors willing to forget about it for at least a decade. The dense, murky, purple colour, closed aromatics and massive flavour richness recall the old, non-compromised blockbuster Médocs. However, this wine possesses sweeter tannin. Patience is definitely required.” - Robert Parker, Wine Advocate, 90/100 (Feb 1997)

“Quite nice, especially considering the vintage. The fruit is fresh with a bright leaning. The nose with its tobacco, forest leaf and cigar box character is even better than what you find on the palate. With an hour in the decanter, this is fully ready to go.” - Jeff Leve, The Wine Cellar Insider, 90/100 (Oct 2018)
