Gazin
Pomerol 2001, 2008
International Bordeaux-Style wines
About this Item
The 2008 Right Bank harvest rewarded Merlot dominant estates with precise viticulture and careful selection, producing wines of genuine concentration and long cellaring potential that have continued to surprise with age. Château Gazin’s 2008 earned 94/100 from Robert Parker, who described it as a dense, structured Pomerol representing a hypothetical blend of its two nearest neighbours Lafleur and Pétrus, and 16.5/20 from Jancis Robinson MW, who found it thick, rich and concentrated with masses of tannin and real vitality. Parker noted the wine’s extraordinary concentration and observed that Gazin remained under most consumers’ radar at the time of his review.
Provenance
The late David Brice was a respected wine connoisseur, collector and co-founder of Brice and Burnett – The Fine Wine Specialists (formerly Wine Cellar). His lifelong passion for wine from all corners of the world wine, and generosity, helped develop a culture of fine wine in South Africa and beyond. Always with value and authenticity in mind, the collection spans a wide range of styles from leading producers and diverse regions. The wines were professionally imported under refrigeration and carefully stored at Brice and Burnett (formerly Wine Cellar) thereafter. Many of the producers are not available in South Africa and provide an excellent buying opportunity.
David studied and tasted Bordeaux more than any other region and he purchased en-primeur, or pre-release, for more than 3 decades. He bought the great vintages, loved magnums, and enjoyed the sweet wines of Sauternes. The cellar contains the famous names, but also highly regarded but lesser-known Chateaux and appellations.
For more detailed information on the lots, please feel free to contact Roland Peens (roland@winecellar.co.za). Roland spent many years sharing and enjoying these wines with David Brice and is happy to provide further insight into the collection.
Critics Ratings
2001 -“A sleeper of the vintage, and possibly the finest Gazin I have ever tasted. A glorious bouquet of burning embers, roasted meats, espresso and sweet plum and blackberry fruit. Richer and deeper than it appeared from barrel, with a tremendous finish. A breakthrough for Gazin.” - Robert Parker, Wine Advocate, 94/100 (Jun 2004)
“Very sweet and luscious on the nose. Some freshness really helps and adds life. Quite zesty and only slightly chewy. A very attractively balanced whole. Definitely a success for this property.” - Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com, 16.5/20 (Mar 2011)
2008 - "Thick and rich and concentrated with masses of tannin and real vitality.” - Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com, 16.5/20 (May 2019)
“A dense plum/purple colour with a gorgeous perfume of licorice, mocha, black currants, plums and Asian spices. Firm, dense and full-bodied with stunning concentration. Represents a hypothetical blend of its two nearby neighbours, Lafleur and Pétrus. Still seemingly under most consumers’ radar.” - Robert Parker, Wine Advocate, 94/100 (May 2011)
