About this Item

Saint-Émilion 2008
2 (1 x 2) 750ml
The 2008 Saint-Émilion vintage produced wines of elegant, refined character, rewarding estates that managed the difficult growing season with precision and restraint. Château La Tour du Pin’s 2008 is historically significant as the first vintage produced under the estate’s new ownership by Aubert Frères, one of the major shareholders of Château Cheval Blanc, with winemaking directed by Pierre Lurton. Robert Parker described it as a sleeper of the vintage, its elegant Pinot Noir-like style of red and black currants with gravelly, earthy notes and herb-inflected character delivering considerable pleasure. Jancis Robinson MW awarded 15.5/20, noting its interesting nose and dry, dense, rather uncompromising character. The blend is approximately 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc.

Provenance

The late David Brice was a respected wine connoisseur, collector and co-founder of Brice and Burnett – The Fine Wine Specialists (formerly Wine Cellar). His lifelong passion for wine from all corners of the world wine, and generosity, helped develop a culture of fine wine in South Africa and beyond. Always with value and authenticity in mind, the collection spans a wide range of styles from leading producers and diverse regions. The wines were professionally imported under refrigeration and carefully stored at Brice and Burnett (formerly Wine Cellar) thereafter. Many of the producers are not available in South Africa and provide an excellent buying opportunity.

David studied and tasted Bordeaux more than any other region and he purchased en-primeur, or pre-release, for more than 3 decades. He bought the great vintages, loved magnums, and enjoyed the sweet wines of Sauternes. The cellar contains the famous names, but also highly regarded but lesser-known Chateaux and appellations.

Critics Ratings

“A lighter-weight wine displaying plenty of gravelly, earthy notes intermixed with herbs as well as red and black currants, in an elegant style reminiscent of Pinot Noir. Already drinking well and certainly a sleeper of the vintage.” - Robert Parker, Wine Advocate (May 2011)

“Very interesting nose that is halfway between Band-aid and pine trees. Very dry and dense. Recalls some of the Moueix Saint-Émilions. Quite uncompromising. A little green on the finish.” - Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com, 15.5/20 (May 2009)
