About this Item

Margaux 2009
2 (1 x 2) 750ml
The 2009 Left Bank harvest delivered exceptional conditions across Margaux, producing wines of ripe, aromatic generosity combined with silky tannins that define the finest expressions of the appellation. Château Durfort-Vivens’s 2009 earned 16.5/20 from James Lawther MW, who found it showing genuine Margaux typicality and elegance at over a decade of age, with ripe fruit, supple tannins and real length. Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate described it as one of the finest Durfort-Vivens yet produced, filled with purity and elegance. Durfort-Vivens is a historic Second Growth Margaux, under the ownership of Gonzague Lurton since 1992, who introduced biodynamic viticulture from 2009 and earned Demeter certification in 2016, making it the first classified growth in Margaux to achieve this distinction. The blend is 73% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot and 4% Cabernet Franc, aged 18 months in 50% new French oak.

Provenance

The late David Brice was a respected wine connoisseur, collector and co-founder of Brice and Burnett – The Fine Wine Specialists (formerly Wine Cellar). His lifelong passion for wine from all corners of the world wine, and generosity, helped develop a culture of fine wine in South Africa and beyond. Always with value and authenticity in mind, the collection spans a wide range of styles from leading producers and diverse regions. The wines were professionally imported under refrigeration and carefully stored at Brice and Burnett (formerly Wine Cellar) thereafter. Many of the producers are not available in South Africa and provide an excellent buying opportunity.

David studied and tasted Bordeaux more than any other region and he purchased en-primeur, or pre-release, for more than 3 decades. He bought the great vintages, loved magnums, and enjoyed the sweet wines of Sauternes. The cellar contains the famous names, but also highly regarded but lesser-known Chateaux and appellations.

For more detailed information on the lots, please feel free to contact Roland Peens (roland@winecellar.co.za). Roland spent many years sharing and enjoying these wines with David Brice and is happy to provide further insight into the collection.

Critics Ratings

“Delicious notes of black olives, unsmoked cigar tobacco, black currants and black cherries. Plump, aromatic and silky with medium to full body and filled with purity and elegance. One of the finest Durfort-Vivens yet produced.” - Robert Parker, Wine Advocate (Dec 2011)

“Aromatically pleasant with a bouquet of blackcurrant and blueberry. Ripe with some sweetness and added density on the mid palate. Tannins supple and round. Length on the finish and, at last, some Margaux typicality and elegance.” - James Lawther MW, JancisRobinson.com, 16.5/20 (Jul 2022)
