About this Item

Sauternes 2007
6 (1 x 6) 375ml
The 2007 Sauternes harvest is broadly considered the finest vintage in the appellation since 2001, producing wines of exceptional balance, concentration and longevity driven by ideal botrytis conditions and precisely judged acidity. Château de Rayne Vigneau’s 2007, offered here in half bottle, earned 95/100 from Neal Martin, who tasted it blind against its peers and called it a wine of outstanding class and panache, with pitch-perfect acidity, wild heather honey and elderflower complexity, and 17/20 from Jancis Robinson MW, who found it racy and citrus-driven with refreshing acidity and real potential. De Rayne Vigneau is a First Growth Premier Cru Classé of Sauternes, its estate distinguished by a remarkable geological curiosity: thousands of semi-precious stones including amethysts, onyx, sapphires and opals are strewn through its subsoil, extensively catalogued by the nineteenth century proprietor Vicomte de Roton. The blend is predominantly Sémillon with Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle.

Provenance

The late David Brice was a respected wine connoisseur, collector and co-founder of Brice and Burnett – The Fine Wine Specialists (formerly Wine Cellar). His lifelong passion for wine from all corners of the world wine, and generosity, helped develop a culture of fine wine in South Africa and beyond. Always with value and authenticity in mind, the collection spans a wide range of styles from leading producers and diverse regions. The wines were professionally imported under refrigeration and carefully stored at Brice and Burnett (formerly Wine Cellar) thereafter. Many of the producers are not available in South Africa and provide an excellent buying opportunity.

David studied and tasted Bordeaux more than any other region and he purchased en-primeur, or pre-release, for more than 3 decades. He bought the great vintages, loved magnums, and enjoyed the sweet wines of Sauternes. The cellar contains the famous names, but also highly regarded but lesser-known Chateaux and appellations.

For more detailed information on the lots, please feel free to contact Roland Peens (roland@winecellar.co.za). Roland spent many years sharing and enjoying these wines with David Brice and is happy to provide further insight into the collection.

Critics Ratings

“Blossomed gloriously in bottle. A rich, decadent bouquet with wild heather honey, orange peel and a touch of lime. Very well-balanced with immense purity and brilliant tension. The acidity is pitch perfect, with wonderful poise towards the finish and hints of elderflower on the aftertaste. Class from start to finish, should age with panache.” - Neal Martin, Wine Advocate, 95/100 (Dec 2011)

“Rich and sweet with some green notes. Citrus and racy. Lots of refreshing acidity. Could come right in the end.” - Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com, 17/20 (Apr 2008)
