About this Item
A pair of Chinese famille rose porcelain plates, Canton, circa 1832
Notes
A pair of famille rose porcelain plates from the Tao Kuang period, each decorated with a phoenix. In Qing court symbolism, the phoenix was associated with the empress and represented virtue, grace and high status. Its inclusion in the design served as a compliment to the empress and conveyed wishes for honour and good fortune. A representative example of mid-19th-century symbolic decoration in famille rose enamels.
