About this Item
Ceramic tobacco jar, Delft, tin-glazed earthenware, De Verguld Blompot" (1616-1841)
Notes
A tin-glazed earthenware tobacco jar painted in cobalt blue with a tropical harbour scene showing palm trees, fencing, a standing figure in feathered headdress and a lidded vessel inscribed “B KAROT TE”. The reverse with simple coastal motifs. Domed brass-mounted cover with knop finial. The base with a hand-painted blue “BP” mark and paper label. Such jars were produced in the later 19th century as part of a European revival of VOC-inspired decorative wares, referencing earlier Dutch East India Company trade imagery in a nostalgic, romanticised manner.
Provenance
Private Collection.
