A glass goblet with rococo-engraved maritime scenes and VOC motifs, mid-18th century
About this Item
Notes
A bell-shaped bowl cut with flutes at the base, supported on a faceted inverted baluster stem with a large, enclosed tear, joined by a silver collar to a replaced scalloped foot. The bowl bears two finely engraved rococo cartouches: one with a four-line rhyme referencing the Sailor’s Return, and another depicting a Dutch sloop or yacht with leeboards approaching an East Indiaman at anchor, the vessel marked at the stern with a VOC monogram. The reverse shows four East Indiamen sailing in a choppy sea, the central ship carrying the inscription A Schat on the stern. The engraving recalls the work of the Sang family, particularly pieces signed by Johan Heinrich Balthaser Sang in the 1750s. A Schat appears to be unrecorded as a glass engraver.
