About this Item
A glass goblet bearing the VOC monogram, mid-18th century
Notes
A finely engraved VOC goblet with a flared bowl, the rim embellished with delicate floral engraving. The bowl is supported by a decoratively cut, inverted tear-drop baluster stem, terminating in a high conical foot with a wide fold. Acquired in Cape Town after World War II, the goblet is comparable to documented examples in the Rijksmuseum (Amsterdam), the Africana Museum (Johannesburg), the Koopmans-de Wet Museum and Groote Schuur. A strong example of mid-18th century VOC ceremonial glass.
