Notes
Batavian furniture was produced in the Dutch East Indies for the colonial market from the late seventeenth century.
The extensive use of pierced brass mounts and studs served both decorative and protective purposes, reinforcing vulnerable edges while providing a visual richness associated with status and authority. Chests were robust, designed for the harsh colonial environment from local hardwoods such as ebony.
