Pair of Cape stinkwood and caned Louis XV style side chairs, late 18th century
each with shield-shaped caned back with central carved acanthus leaf cresting, serpentine-fronted caned seat with foliate-carved apron, raised on cabriole legs joined by a wavy moulded H-shaped stretcher, terminating in pad feet

Louis XV reigned from 1723 to 1774, and during that time in France and twenty or thirty years later at the Cape, chairs and tables were made in this style which now bears his name. In the late 18th century, Cape Town was known as 'Little Paris', and it was during this time that these fine and elegant Rococo chairs were made. The foliate carvings that adorn the centre of the back rail and the front of the seat stretcher are unusual on Cape furniture, except on these French-influenced pieces. The symmetrical design and Queen Anne cabriole leg are both distinctive characteristics of the Baroque style.
