each with caned back within a shaped frame, down-swept open arms, caned seat with serpentine-shaped skirt, raised on cabriole legs terminating in pointed pad feet

Notes

This chair has its origins in the French confessional chair popular in the Louis XV period. The S-shaped curves, shield-shaped seat, shaped apron, slender cabriole legs and slipper feet of these tub or barrel chairs correspond with the characteristics of Rococo furniture.

The caned seat at the Cape was associated with town or patrician furniture while their country counterparts used riempies.

Provenance

Private Collection.
