About this Item

A Chinese Fehua-glazed earthenware figure of a seated official, late Ming dynasty, 1368-1644
height: 33cm; width: 18cm; depth: 10cm

Notes

Moulded as a seated court official with an upright posture and high black official's cap, the face and hands left unglazed in natural biscuit to enhance the lifelike modelling. The layered robes are glazed in vibrant sancai tones of turquoise, amber and deep olive, with stylised dragons in low relief symbolising authority. The flowing, pooled glazes are characteristic of Tang-revival ware from provincial Ming kilns. The figure sits on a rectangular plinth.

Provenance

Private Collection.
