Notes
These elaborate bonbon dishes were made in France at the height of the 'Naturalist Movement' in decorative arts. This movement, which emerged in the mid-19th century, was a reaction against rigid historic styles and placed nature at the centre of design.
The combination of a tortoise and a serpent was popular among French sculptors influenced by mythological and allegorical themes.
