each with a serpentine top rail above a pierced and foliate-carved splat, the drop-in rose velvet seat, raised on square-section legs joined by a box-stretcher, later painted green finish with hand-painted floral motifs throughout

Notes

Chippendale's original designs from the late 18th century were primarily executed in highly polished, unpainted mahogany. Decorative painting on furniture became fashionable again in the inter-war and post-war periods when decorators were looking for a softer, more romantic take on traditional heavy Georgian interiors. These painted chairs combine Neo-classical decorative painting with a Rococo back splat, typical of revival interpretations from the mid-20th century.
