Victorian mahogany Canterbury, 19th century
with two open divisions headed by turned finials at the corners, square-section top rails, uprights and sides over a conforming base, raised on ring-turned legs

Notes
The Canterbury was introduced in England in the late 18th century as a piece of furniture to store sheet music. The word first appeared in Thomas Sheraton's Dictionary of 1803, and they were so called because the Bishop of Canterbury was the first to give an order for this piece.
